Maslenitsa is also called the <em>Winter Holiday,\u00a0<\/em>a time when friends and relatives gather together. Traditionally the feasts leftovers are thrown into fire, and it&#8217;s ash is buried under the snow, symbolizing the fertilization of crops.<\/p>\n<p>In soviet period,\u00a0<em>Maslenitsa,\u00a0<\/em>like all religious celebrations, was officially forbidden, but\u00a0continued to be celebrated individually, people sharing food with other families.
